Toutes les études phylogénétiques avec un large échantillonnage

défini Thelypteris s.s., apparenté (sœur) du reste des Thelypteridoideae.

Cette sous-famille comprend plus de 900 espèces,

sœur de la plus petite Sous-Famille de Phegopteridoideae

(Macrothelypteris, Pseudophegopteris, Phegopteris).

Thélyptéris s.s. représente une ancienne lignée,

divergente de ses plus proches parents existants peut-être

il y à 86 Ma.

Le genre a été accepté dans un sens large,

comprenant tout ou presque 1000 espèces dans la famille

Thelypteridaceae.

Pour certains,

850 espèces enregistrées sous le nom de genre Thelypteris,

9 espèces légitimes.

Pour certains, 2 espèces légitimes,

Thelypteris confluens ; Thelypteris palustris.

Étymologie :

Du grec θῆλυς, thêlus : femelle ;

et de 

πτερίς, pterís : fougère.

En référence au rhizome souterrain tortueux,

qui le distinguent de Sphaerostephanos.
Référence à l'ancien nom grec pour une fougère plus délicate

que la fougère mâle, Dryopteris filix-mas.
