Étymologie :
Du grec, Spilos - σπίλος : une tache,
et
anthos - τò âνθος, ους : fleur.
En référence aux fleurs de ce genre tachetées.

Ce nouveau genre était classé dans le genre Masdevallia,
sous-genre Amanda.
